SSE Women’s FA Cup Final: Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea
She Kicks, issue 36, July 2016 pp.8–9
Danielle Carter’s first-half strike won Arsenal a fourteenth Women’s FA Cup against holders and reigning double winners Chelsea, before 32,912 at Wembley on 14 May 2016. Carter describes the goal: a ball over the top, a cut inside, and a shot she knew would at least test the goalkeeper. Kelly Smith, winning her fifth FA Cup, says she had questioned after the previous year’s injury whether that would be it for her, and calls Carter the hero of the day. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes is gracious in defeat, saying Arsenal turned up and performed, that her side improved when Niamh Fahey came on, and that finals are decided not by having a million chances but by taking the right one.
