Small Yet Ornate, It’s Your #SK78! (Editor’s Letter)

She Kicks, issue 78, April 2023 p.3

Jen O’Neill marks 25 years since the first issue of a women’s football magazine she worked on, and uses the anniversary to say goodbye to two people rather than to celebrate herself. Helen Ward’s line about having had a good innings and met some wicked people gives the letter its warmth; Carly Telford’s farewell letter supplies its other half, and O’Neill recalls playing in front of a fourteen-year-old Telford in a relegation six-pointer at Brighton more than twenty years ago. She argues that for all the bite-sized insight multi-media provides, sitting down with a player still has value. A third tribute goes to Kelly Simmons OBE, leaving The FA after thirty years, and to the school-sport changes the EURO-winning Lionesses asked for the morning after Wembley.
