#SKThrowback: Jill Scott’s Extra-Time Semi-Final Winner v Netherlands, Euro 2009 (full-page photograph)
She Kicks, issue 42, July 2017 p.67
A full-page throwback photograph of Jill Scott heading, or by the caption’s account nosing, England’s extra-time winner against the Netherlands in the Euro 2009 semi-final. The placement is deliberate rather than nostalgic: the same issue profiles Scott among the twenty-three heading to a tournament hosted by the Netherlands, and no reader in July 2017 could look at it without wondering whether the two sides would meet again. They did not – the hosts won the tournament without playing England, who lost their semi-final to the eventual runners-up. The #SKThrowback slot is the magazine’s regular single-page device for setting the current England side against its own history, and this is a particularly loaded use of it.
