Natalia Sollohub’s history of the Women’s EURO in numbers, printed as the tournament arrived in England. It began in August 1982 as the European Competition for Representative Women’s Teams, with sixteen of UEFA’s thirty-three members forming four qualifying groups; by EURO 2022 qualification UEFA had grown to fifty-five, with only Gibraltar, Liechtenstein and San Marino never having entered. Six nations have reached every finals since a group stage arrived in 1997. The records are hers to enjoy: twenty final-tournament appearances for Solveig Gulbrandsen and Birgit Prinz, sixty-one overall for England’s Gill Coultard, ten final-tournament goals for Inka Grings, and England’s 6-0 win over Scotland as the biggest victory at a finals. Prize money first appeared in 2009; the 2022 pot was twice that of 2017.
