Melbourne City won a fifth Ninja A-League Women title, beating Wellington Phoenix 3-1 in the grand final at AAMI Park on 16 May before a crowd of 7,174. The meeting of the regular season’s top two carried a British thread: former Everton and Aston Villa defender Danielle Turner started for City and ex-Hibernian attacker Brooke Nunn for the Phoenix, with one-time England Under-23 defender Ellie Wilson on the City bench and Wales midfielder Laura Hughes introduced from it. Michael Matricciani’s side were in command through a double from the competition’s leading scorer Holly McNamara, her 13th and 14th of the campaign, and a third from Leticia McKenna, before Makala Woods pulled one back for Bev Priestman’s Phoenix.
