Shetland Win Closest Mitchell Shield Yet
She Kicks, issue 23, September 2014 pp.40–41
Shetland won the Mitchell Shield for a ninth successive year, coming from two goals down to beat Orkney 5-3 after extra time away from home. Scotland youth squad member Ruth Clark opened the scoring with a free-kick into the top corner and the hosts doubled their lead on 25 minutes, before Aleisha Devine replied quickly and Abbey Irvine levelled on half-time. The closing minutes of normal time brought two contested goals, Rhea Nicolson’s free-kick for Shetland judged to have crossed the line and Orkney forcing home a disputed corner in the dying seconds. In extra time Devine scored again and Stacey Laurenson made it 5-3. Coach John Ward called it a magnificent performance in front of a crowd of over a hundred; captain Karen Jarvie said it was the closest of the nine meetings.
