Sherry McCue profile: Aston Villa and England U-19
She Kicks, issue SK19, February 2014 p.22
England Under-19 captain Sherry McCue looks ahead to a big year: the start of the WSL2 season with Aston Villa, an Under-23 camp in La Manga and the Under-20 World Cup in Canada. She reflects on Villa’s 2-0 third-round cup defeat to fellow WSL2 side Doncaster Rovers Belles on 9 February, expects every game in the new division to be tough, and names Paul Scholes and Jack Wilshere as role models despite being a Stoke fan. McCue describes training every day with a Saturday’s rest, using equipment in her shed and a local field, and says she has never trained so hard. Away from football she is a newly qualified retained firefighter with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, coaches her younger sister’s team Stone Dominoes Under-13s, and car washes, dog walks and cleans for people in her village. Villa head coach Joe Hunt praises her rehabilitation from an ankle injury and calls her a complete player.
