SheBelieves Cup 2017, Matchday 2: England 1-0 USA

England beat the United States one-nil at the Red Bull Arena in sub-zero temperatures, an historic first win over them on American soil and the Lionesses’ first goal against them in the USA. Ellen White struck on eighty-nine minutes and describes it: a corner came in, Lucy Bronze hit the bar with an unbelievable strike, Jodie Taylor ran in for what might have been a penalty, bodies jumped, and the ball bounced perfectly for a poacher’s goal that she smashed into the roof of the net. Mark Sampson said England were strong from front to back in every position, that they had to win one game to see how far the team can go, and that the result could be a platform.
