She Reads: Kicking Reads – Books About the Women’s Game
She Kicks, issue 37, September 2016 pp.42–43
Natalia Sollohub compiles an annotated checklist of books about women’s football, arranged by theme. Early pioneers are covered by Gail Newsham’s In a League of Their Own on Dick, Kerr Ladies, with Tim Tate’s Girls With Balls and Barbara Jacobs’ account of Alice Woods and Lily Parr as alternatives. Wendy Owen’s Kicking Against Tradition and Sue Lopez’s Women on the Ball represent the era after the FA ban was lifted. Pete Davies’ I Lost My Heart to the Belles is the club classic; Catherine Etoe and Sollohub’s Three Lions on Her Shirt and Carrie Dunn’s The Roar of the Lionesses cover England. Kelly Smith’s Footballer heads the autobiographies, with titles for younger readers alongside.
