She Kicks Back: Katy Mac Kicks Back (Katy McLean interview)
She Kicks, issue 36, July 2016 pp.46–47
Rugby World Cup winner Katy McLean MBE, a former primary school teacher now a full-time professional, talks about chasing a place in the Great Britain Sevens squad for Rio, where twenty-three are training for twelve places and two non-playing reserves. She played a bit of football in the same Boldon Girls side as Jill Scott, and trained in the North East alongside Demi Stokes, Carly Telford, Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze under Julie Twaddle, then of Sunderland. Switching from fifteens to sevens has meant far more high-intensity running, which she does not recommend. Asked who trains harder, footballers or rugby players, she answers her own sport by far, and calls for women’s sports to support each other.
