She Kicks Back: Glenn Who? Meet Ted Copeland

She Kicks, issue 70, December 2021 pp.38–39

Part of the She Kicks Back 25th-anniversary feature, revisiting Ted Copeland, who appeared in the magazine’s first issue as England’s other manager, a post he had held since 1993. He told the magazine then that managing the women’s team lacked the glamour associated with the men’s but that the challenge was certainly no less. The previous year he had taken England to a World Cup quarter-final and with it Olympic qualification, though England were not permitted to form a team and missed out. He was questioned on life as a man in the women’s game, on criticism of a southern bias in his selections, and on whether he wanted the job full-time, answering that a full-time England manager would be needed once there were full-time players. Hope Powell succeeded him in 1998; he later helped found a women’s academy at East Durham Community College with Gill Coultard coaching, and now lives in Spain.
