She Kicks a Beat: Swing It, Move It, Shake It, Make It (Ellie Carpenter)

She Kicks, issue 54, June 2019 pp.26–27

She Kicks’ music slot goes to a World Cup special with Ellie Carpenter, the Portland Thorns full-back who became the youngest player in NWSL history when she debuted at 18 years and 11 days, and the first footballer born this millennium to play for Australia. Raised on a farm in Cowra, New South Wales by two PE teachers, she was second in the country for 100 metres at primary school and moved to Sydney at twelve to commit to football. Music runs through the family: her mother makes compilations for her dance students and her brother produces. Carpenter talks about performing a rap for the Young Matildas, an impromptu turn in the Thorns meeting room, Lydia Williams as squad DJ, and the senior players who were themselves teenagers at the 2011 World Cup.
