Semi Finals: England 4-0 Sweden

A strong Swedish start was thwarted by Mary Earps, and once Beth Mead added her sixth of the tournament with a quality touch and finish, England and the crowd never looked back. Lucy Bronze headed the second and admits she did not know it had gone in because the ball went through so many bodies before a herd of people ran at her. Fran Kirby completed the scoring, but what everybody talked about afterwards was Alessia Russo’s backheeled nutmeg from a tight angle, a goal Ella Toone says made the bench erupt in disbelief. Russo’s own account is unglamorous: the ball fell back to her, she should have scored first time, so she swung a foot at it. Ellen White burst into tears at the whistle and had to be cradled by the team doctor.
