Scotland’s Goal-Lee (Lee Alexander interview)

She Kicks, issue 56, October 2019 pp.24–28

Scotland’s goalkeeper had just seventeen caps when she walked out in Nice to face England in her country’s first Women’s World Cup match, having spent years behind Gemma Fay and Shannon Lynn. Lee Alexander tells She Kicks she was not daunted but excited, and determined to enjoy it. She is unsparing about what followed: three matches, three VAR penalties, and by the third you simply knew it would be given. She saved the spot-kick against Argentina only to see it retaken for encroachment, and calls losing a 3-0 lead the harshest lesson she will ever learn. A bank worker who has won eight league titles with Glasgow City, she is candid about what she wants next: to play professionally, and to test herself in England.
