Safe Hands: Kirstie Levell (Everton)

She Kicks, issue 41, May 2017 p.45

Everton’s goalkeeper picks a penalty shoot-out for England Under-17s at the Euros, where she saved two, as her favourite moment, on the grounds that those are the saves that really matter. She went in goal at seven when a boys’ team keeper did not fancy it, started pulling off saves that shocked the lads, and loved diving around in the mud. Distribution is the attribute she has worked hardest on, particularly clipped balls to full backs and forwards; height is the one thing she wishes she could change. She admires Buffon for daring and De Gea for his footwork, would spend far longer choosing gloves than boots, and tells young keepers never to accept blame for a goal, because a whole team let it through before it reached them.
