Safe Hands: Hannah Hampton (Birmingham City)

She Kicks, issue 59, March 2020 pp.48–49

The goalkeepers’ slot goes to Birmingham City’s teenage keeper, and her route into the position is unusually well dated. She was a striker until about 14, but at 12, playing for Stoke City’s centre of excellence, the goalkeeper was injured in the warm-up, volunteers were called for and her hand went up first. An England scout on the touchline that day asked her coach to forward her name as an Under-15 goalkeeper, and she was at her first England camp at 12. She rates her distribution first – modern keepers, she argues, have to play with both feet and deliver to multiple positions at different heights – then her agility around the goal. Her favourite save is a 90th-minute fingertip stop against Italy that took England Under-17s to a Euro finals.
