Safe Hands: Carly Telford (Chelsea)
She Kicks, issue 42, July 2017 p.66
Carly Telford picks a double save for Notts County against Birmingham on the last day of the 2014 season as her favourite, because the 2-2 draw cost Birmingham the title in a three-way race that raised the profile of the whole league. She became a goalkeeper at twelve or thirteen by accident, turning up alone and terrified to an outfield trial wearing a goalkeeper’s top because it was a freezing north-east night, and never looked back. Distribution is her strength – clubs now want goalkeepers who can pass – and she describes herself, deadpan, as the Iniesta of goalkeepers. She admires Rachel Brown-Finnis, who coached her with England youth teams, and tells young keepers there will be dark days but far more good ones.
