Round The World Tour: Away From The WSL – A Global Tour Of Women’s Footie Leagues
She Kicks, issue 69, October 2021 pp.48–51
A single survey of five leagues a British reader is unlikely to follow, written as a flight. The NWSL is the youngest of them and widely regarded as the best for quality despite recurring problems off the pitch, and everything is streamed live on Twitch. Toppserien and Damallsvenskan have become finishing schools whose best players are scooped up elsewhere, the Swedish league at least watchable with a subscription. France is polarised: Lyon won fourteen straight titles before PSG finally took one, and Bordeaux have risen with a real plan. Germany’s Frauen-Bundesliga has grown middle-heavy as Bayern and Wolfsburg feed on clubs that cannot go professional – though Borussia Dortmund have at last formed a team, in the eighth tier.
