Reds On Tour: Siobhan Chamberlain’s South Africa Tour Diary
She Kicks, issue 34, April 2016 pp.19–20
England goalkeeper and new Liverpool number one Siobhan Chamberlain keeps a day-by-day diary of the club’s pre-season tour to South Africa. Greeted by singing supporters in Johannesburg after twenty-four hours of travel, the squad train in thirty-degree heat at altitude and grind out a two-one win over Yarona Ladies through late goals from Caroline Weir and Katie Zelem. A photo shoot for the South African Sunday Times follows, then what she calls the most heart-rending day of many players’ careers: a coaching session with forty girls in Alexandra, one of the country’s worst-off townships. On match day the squad visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation and a lion park before coming from two down to win six-two in Soweto.
