Purdon: Lack of Cash Flow a ‘Concern’ in Post-Coronavirus Football

She Kicks, issue 61, June 2020 p.8

An interview with Jane Purdon, chief executive of Women in Football, speaking to Mark Clemmit as part of the UCFB Insight Series about the pandemic’s economic impact on the game. Purdon says she is worried about all of football, not only the women’s game, noting the momentum an Olympic year and a home EURO were meant to carry on from the 2019 World Cup. Cash flow is her greatest concern: she describes the Premier League as the wealth spring that funds not only its own clubs but community, youth development and girls’ programmes throughout English football down to the National League, so that when games stop there is an immediate problem with everyone’s cash flow. She explains that Women in Football has appealed through its social channels for people’s lockdown experiences, good and bad, and warns the full economic impact will not be clear until the terms of any restart are known.
