Players’ Players: Lucy Bronze & Martha Harris on winning the PFA awards
She Kicks, issue SK21, June 2014 p.24
Catherine Etoe reports on Liverpool’s double at the PFA awards in London, where defenders Lucy Bronze and Martha Harris were named Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. Neither expected to be nominated, let alone win; Bronze assumed the call was about the young player award until she met Harris, already dressed, coming out of a hotel lift. Casey Stoney presented Harris’s award, which she says eased the nerves. Bronze puts her win down to a first season without injury, a call-up and starting place with England and a league title, and reflects on feeling two seasons behind contemporaries like Gemma Bonner, Jade Moore, Toni Duggan and Jordan Nobbs. Harris describes leaving Lincoln after ten years and credits Stoney with teaching her to defend. Factfiles record Bronze’s socks habit and Harris’s Lincoln family connections.
