Player Interview — Toni Duggan

The Everton forward reflects on winning Women’s Player of the Year at the North West Football Awards, an evening also honouring Jamie Carragher and Sir Alex Ferguson, where Roberto Martinez came over to congratulate her. Toni Duggan calls 2013 up and down: strong individually but hard as a team, scoring twice in defeats and following a goal against Russia with a tournament exit. She says the number nine shirt and the responsibility of scoring suit her, and that starting for England carries less pressure than coming on for ten minutes. Four years after the under-19 side conquered Europe in 2009 she is glad five of that squad are now in the senior set-up. She found out about Hope Powell’s sacking on Twitter, and credits PFA agent Neil Mellor.
