Murray’s Matters
She Kicks, issue 70, December 2021 p.47
Hibernian captain Joelle Murray’s View From The Field column, boarding the magazine’s 25th-anniversary time machine. In 1996 she was playing for her local team Chirnside Juniors, where her father also played and managed, and she recalls him offering ten pounds for a hundred keepy-ups using both feet, money she never collected. Euro 96 was her first experience of watching Scotland’s men in a finals, and she admits it took years to appreciate the quality of Gascoigne’s goal. Her first memory of women’s football on mainstream television is the FA Cup final, always played on a bank holiday, with Arsenal the team she supported because Julie Fleeting played for them. She reflects on being recognised, on the scrapbook she made from her grandparents’ cuttings, and on the record 5,512 crowd at Easter Road.
