Manchester Memories (Manchester City)

She Kicks Special Edition, October 2016 p.74

A team retrospective on Manchester City’s 2016, the year the club’s vision started to deliver, with crowds pushing 5,000 at the Academy Stadium and both the WSL title and the Continental Cup won. It is built around manager Nick Cushing, who describes recruiting in three phases: Steph Houghton, Karen Bardsley, Jill Scott and Toni Duggan for experience and a winning mentality, then full-backs Demi Stokes and Lucy Bronze to make the club’s style possible, then Marie Hourihan, Jane Ross and Kosovare Asllani for competition and goals. He says he is in the job for one reason, to improve players, and tells them that at 55 or 60 they will remember every game rather than any of the money. Houghton, Jill Scott, Duggan and Ross add their own reflections.
