Locker Room – Captain’s Chat: Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir
She Kicks, issue 46, March 2018 p.71
The Locker Room’s Captain’s Chat features VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir on wearing the armband for Iceland, having also captained Haukar at home and Rosengard for a season in Malmo. She describes herself as a captain who leads by good example in training and games, always focused, giving full effort, talking a lot and carrying a strong presence, a type she says she has been since she was little and simply amounts to being herself. She calls leading her country in every game an honour but singles out Iceland’s 3-2 World Cup qualifying win away to Germany as a special moment, along with leading the team at a major tournament. Gunnarsdottir argues a captain should be approachable and looked up to, gives few pre-match speeches, and says the responsibility never stops at the final whistle.
