La Roja Rule: Spain Win the UEFA Under-19 Euros in Northern Ireland
She Kicks, issue 43, September 2017 p.30
Spain finally take an Under-19 European title at the fourth attempt, beating France 3-2 at Windsor Park in front of more than three thousand, with Golden Boot winner Patricia Guijarro scoring twice in a comeback that also avenged the previous year’s final. The tournament sends six European sides to the 2018 Under-20 World Cup in Brittany: the two finalists, hosts France, Germany, the Netherlands and England, who came through a play-off against Scotland thanks to Zoe Cross and Mollie Rouse. For the hosts there was history of a different scale – Northern Ireland scored their first ever goal at a European finals and took their first ever point, drawing 1-1 with Scotland, before losing narrowly to the eventual champions.
