Rather than a player or coach interview, Spain’s preview is a Q&A with David Menayo of the sports daily MARCA, taking the temperature of a squad that won the 2023/24 Nations League and topped its EURO qualifying group while still living with the aftermath of Jorge Vilda’s departure and Luis Rubiales’s disgrace. Menayo says Montse Tome is constantly questioned, more by fans than by media, her five years as Vilda’s assistant weighing heavily from the start, though the Nations League title and Olympic qualification tempered the debate. He argues the team is tactically richer with more resources. On public interest he is blunt: support has grown less than many hoped after the World Cup, with the unwanted kiss and the legal proceedings polarising society. He names Cata Coll, Irene Paredes and Patri Guijarro as the backbone.
