Kirk Keen To Close Gap On Top Teams (Willie Kirk interview)

She Kicks, issue 41, May 2017 p.29

Newly recommitted to Bristol City, Willie Kirk frames the Spring Series as trial and error inside an eighteen-month project aimed at raising standards before the 2017-18 winter season proper. He describes a teaching method built on video – match footage of his own side and opponents, reviewed as a squad, in small groups and individually in players’ own time – supported by two or three team meetings a week. Asked what single change would help most, he answers money, and is precise about why: more hours for support staff, a GPS system, and wages high enough that players do not need casual work and can actually rest. That gap in quantity, quality and detail of training, he argues, is the real difference between WSL1 and WSL2.
