Kerys Harrop’s View From The Field column, opening the new year with Tottenham’s first game of 2022 called off through COVID cases and injuries in the Chelsea camp. She describes the following home fixture against West Ham, in which Rosella Ayane coolly slotted a penalty and Spurs dominated against ten players before conceding an injury-time equaliser that felt like a loss, costing points in the race for Champions League places. She notes a shock result as her old club Birmingham beat Arsenal 2-0, and argues that teams which take each game as it comes rather than watching the table are the ones that hold their nerve. She closes on Coventry United going into administration before Christmas, having played them weeks earlier in the Continental Cup, calling it a reminder of how fragile the game is and why players should pursue education alongside it.
