Irish WNL 2016: Opening Series of Matches

She Kicks, issue 37, September 2016 p.36

To allow the transition to summer football in 2017, the Irish Women’s National League season is compressed into eighteen weeks with all forty-two matches packed into it, meaning at least one midweek away game for every part-time club. The league kicked off in August with title-holders Wexford Youths held to a one-all draw by UCD at a wet Ferrycarrig Park, Aoibhinn Webb and the previous season’s top scorer Aine O’Gorman scoring. Wexford then suffered a shock one-nil away defeat to Peamount United, the only goal coming from Heather Payne. The item continues the reporting begun in the previous issue, which recorded the weather postponements and the withdrawal of Castlebar Celtic that prompted the change.
