International News: Team GB
She Kicks, issue 66, April 2021 p.7
Hege Riise, the former Norway midfielder who was already interim England manager, is confirmed to lead Team GB in Tokyo. The magazine sets out why the appointment fits: she won Olympic gold as a player with Norway in 2000, was an assistant coach with the United States when they took the title at London 2012, and played professionally in Japan in the 1990s. An eighteen-player squad with four travelling reserves is to be announced in May, and with National Lottery backing the preparation will include a warm-up international on home soil. Riise says she has been watching all the games and has a list of players she follows closely, and that coming from outside is a benefit because she can pick freely. Her closing line is that they travel to win.
