She Kicks, issue 86, September 2024 pp.34–36

Watford’s top scorer Carly Johns discusses her move to Durham and first professional contract, a four-and-a-half-hour relocation from the South Coast to the North East. Having top-scored for a Watford side relegated from the Championship, the 21-year-old forward explains what convinced her to join Durham, including conversations with then-director of football Lee Sanders and a familiar face in assistant coach George Anthony from her Oxford United days. She recalls a team trip to Longsands Beach in a Toy Story wetsuit, her past life as a qualified lifeguard, and lessons learned from former Watford teammate Gemma Davison. Johns reflects on carrying the weight of being her team’s main goal threat and the confidence that comes with being trusted to deliver.
