Home Nations’ International Action: #WEURO2022 Qualifying, October 2020
She Kicks, issue 64, December 2020 pp.8–9
England, hosts and therefore without qualifiers, had their October friendly in Germany cancelled and a December date with Norway called off too, so Phil Neville used extended September and October camps to run competitive eleven-a-side internal matches at St George’s Park. Northern Ireland went to Belarus needing a result, had goalkeeper Jacqueline Burns sent off after 27 minutes and won anyway through Rachel Furness’ header. Scotland beat Albania 3-0 at Tynecastle with 77 per cent of the ball, then lost in Helsinki to a scrappy Eveliina Summanen goal against Anna Signeul’s Finland. Wales hit four past the Faroe Islands, Helen Ward taking her record to 42 and Lily Woodham opening her account, but a single switch-off let Frida Maanum win it for Norway in Cardiff.
