The two best teams in the tournament met in the final and provided drama from the first second to the last, including six-goal Alexandra Popp being ruled out just before kick-off. It was a battle played at a fierce tempo in which substitutes again supplied the cutting edge: Keira Walsh’s exquisite pass found Ella Toone, whose touch and lob were sublime, before Tabea Wassmuth crossed for Lina Magull to force extra time. Then Chloe Kelly reacted quickest in the six-yard area and Wembley turned from tension to pandemonium. Leah Williamson speaks about the weight of captaincy and seeing twenty-three players prove they would do anything for each other; Lucy Bronze would have traded her Champions Leagues for the night; and Sarina Wiegman, voice already going, says simply that England are European champions.
