Hayes in Coaching Heaven: Chelsea reach UWCL last 16 after beating Glasgow City
She Kicks, issue 31, November 2015 p.9
Catherine Etoe reports on Chelsea’s passage into the Champions League last 16 after they made short work of Glasgow City, beating Scott Booth’s side 4-0 on aggregate with a 3-0 win in Airdrie that left Emma Hayes in what she called coaching heaven. Hayes, who was assistant to Vic Akers when Arsenal won the Quadruple in 2007, reminds her players that only one English team in 15 years has won the competition and that four of the current group, including Katie Chapman, Gilly Flaherty and Gemma Davison, were in that dressing room. She argues Arsenal succeeded only after six or seven attempts and that Chelsea must learn quickly, praising her players’ patience against the Scottish champions. The last 16 draw pairs Chelsea with two-time winners Wolfsburg at Staines Town in November, with Hayes stressing the defensive solidity behind 13 clean sheets.
