Interview
Foudy Farewell (Julie Foudy)
She Kicks Special Edition, October 2016 p.33
An interview marking the 2004 retirement of the United States captain, who stepped down alongside Mia Hamm and Joy Fawcett after a ten-game Fan Celebration Tour across ten cities. Capped 272 times, Foudy was for many years the captain and voice of a team that changed the face of women’s football through the 1999 World Cup, having won the tournament twice, first in 1991 when nobody noticed. She describes the players pushing US Soccer to go big for 1999, and the panic six months out that nobody would come, arguing they could easily have kept it regional, safe and boring. A 1997 FIFA Fair Play award winner for work against child labour, she names professional leagues as the biggest change and says what she misses most is the constant laughter.
