Foreign Kicks: South Africa (Banyana Banyana) and JVW Girls interview with Lauren Duncan
She Kicks, issue 30, October 2015 p.46
A Foreign Kicks feature on South Africa, where Banyana Banyana, coached by Vera Pauw, missed out on Canada 2015 by a single goal in a play-off against Cote d’Ivoire, and where a little under 200,000 girls and women are estimated to play. The semi-professional SASOL League sits at the top of a structure of regional and amateur leagues, and the country’s most famous player, the 114-times capped Portia Modise, retired earlier in the year. Lauren Duncan of JVW Girls describes a Johannesburg club of 55 to 60 registered players across three teams, including an Under-13 side playing in a boys’ league and a first team in the Sasol League containing four national team players. Named after Banyana captain Janine van Wyk, the programme also runs a high school league of 1,800 players.
