Foreign Kicks: Katrina’s Glory (Katrina Gorry interview)

She Kicks, issue 26, February 2015 pp.38–39

Katrina Gorry, known as Mini for her four foot nine frame, reflects on being named AFC Women’s Player of the Year for 2014, joining names such as Sun Wen and Aya Miyama on a list only Kate Gill had previously reached from Australia. It never crossed her mind she could win, she says, and she was waiting for another name when hers appeared on the screen. She followed it with the Football Federation Australia Women’s Player of the Year, an award she credits to team-mates including Sam Kerr (Australia). Gorry describes growing up alongside a squad averaging around 23, welcomes a Group of Death draw with the United States, Sweden and Nigeria, and contrasts full-time life at FC Kansas City with working eight-hour café shifts before training in Australia.
