Five-Star Blues (Birmingham City 5-1 Bristol City)

A brief match report on the standout result of the Barclays WSL 2’s opening weekend: Birmingham City’s 5-1 demolition of promotion-fancied Bristol City. Last season’s runners-up raced into the game, with a Simone Magill double plus debut goals from Lily Crosthwaite and Batcheba Louis, and a further strike from captain Christie Harrison-Murray. Bristol City, also tipped for a promotion push, could only reply through Maria Farrugia on her first appearance for the Robins, as Birmingham served early notice of their title credentials for the new campaign, building on a runners-up finish the previous season in a division shaping up as one of the most competitive in years, with several ambitious, well-resourced clubs chasing the two automatic promotion places back to the Barclays WSL.
