She Kicks, issue 28, June 2015 p.28

A set of tournament facts compiled ahead of Canada 2015. It will be the first Women’s World Cup with 24 teams, double the number at the first tournament in China 24 years earlier. Germany, Japan, Norway and the USA are the only winners, and the USA the only side to reach the semi-finals in all six previous editions. The 1999 final drew a world record 90,185 to the Rose Bowl. Michelle Akers still holds the record for most goals in a match with five, while Birgit Prinz and Marta share the all-time record on fourteen. Canada 2015 is England’s fourth World Cup and their first in three consecutive finals, with Eniola Aluko, Karen Carney, Alex Scott, Jill Scott, Casey Stoney and Fara Williams all hoping for a third. Kelly Smith is England’s leading scorer with four.
