Faye White — Faye’s Faves: England Memories

She Kicks, issue SK08, May 2012 p.20

Faye White, whose pregnancy has brought an end to her time as England captain, picks two favourite memories from her international career. First is captaining England at the 2007 Women’s World Cup in China, which she calls an amazing experience and the team’s first on such a massive world stage, remembering packed stadiums and an atmosphere, pressure and culture unlike anything she had felt, and saying it put the England side on other nations’ radar. Second is the first time she captained England, in 2002 at the age of 24, in a World Cup qualifying play-off against Iceland at Birmingham’s St Andrew’s. Having taken the armband in the second half of an earlier match, this was her first full game as captain and, not knowing whether it would be her only one, the proudest day of her career.
