Fans in Focus: NWSL Supporter Culture (Part One)

She Kicks, issue 84, May 2024 pp.21–25

The first instalment of a two-part feature exploring National Women’s Soccer League supporter culture, thirteen seasons into the league’s history. She Kicks speaks to fan groups from four clubs: Angel City FC’s Pandemonium on building an inclusive, multicultural matchday sound; Gotham FC’s Cloud 9 on straddling New York and New Jersey identities since the Sky Blue FC rebrand; San Diego Wave’s Sirens on the growth of merchandise and player-specific chants around goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan; and Washington Spirit’s Squadron on rebuilding trust with ownership after a turbulent past, including the campaign that forced out former owner Steve Baldwin. Contributors reflect on away-day culture, catering to adult fans, rivalry etiquette, and how well clubs listen to their supporters. Part two follows in issue 85.
