Esme Morgan: England’s Game-Changing Defender

She Kicks, issue 91, September 2025 pp.88–89

Catherine Mackenzie’s analysis argues that England’s game changers were not only the goalscorers. While Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly took the spotlight in the knockout rounds, another of Sarina Wiegman’s finishers, the head coach’s term for substitutes, went largely unnoticed: defender Esme Morgan. Since debuting under Wiegman in 2022 the 24-year-old has been a consistent squad member without much tournament exposure, an unused substitute at the 2023 World Cup, so the frantic quarter-final turnaround against Sweden was her first appearance in a major competition. The piece traces the pattern back to December 2023, when she replaced Jess Carter just after the hour against the Netherlands with England having trailed 2-0 at half-time, improving their build-up through midfield on the way to Ella Toone’s eventual winner.
