#ENGSWE: England 0-2 Sweden
She Kicks, issue 55, August 2019 p.23
Sweden took the bronze medal at France 2019 by beating England 2-0 in Nice on 6 July, and She Kicks is blunt about the manner of it. Kosovare Asllani and Sofia Jakobsson fired the Swedes into a two-goal lead against a wobbling England side still absorbing the semi-final defeat four days earlier. Fran Kirby pulled one back, and VAR then thwarted Ellen White again, a recurring theme of England’s tournament. It was Sweden’s third World Cup bronze after 1991 and 2011, and it came in captain Caroline Seger’s 200th international appearance. England finished fourth, one place worse than 2015, and went home to a build-up towards Tokyo and a home European Championship.
