England Team Poster (European Champions 2022)

The issue’s centrepiece poster: two facing pages of the England squad as European champions, printed without a word of caption and credited to Daniela Porcelli for Sports Press Photo. On the first, the team stand in a line on the Wembley pitch, medals round their necks and the trophy raised, fireworks and a full stand behind them; on the second they are grouped on the grass, flags draped, some kneeling, some flat out, the trophy held at the front. Nobody is named, but the pages are the reason a reader kept the issue: the squad that won England’s first major senior football tournament, photographed at the moment it happened and laid out to be pulled from the magazine and put on a wall. It is the single most reproducible image in the issue.
