England Internationals: England 8-0 Malta; Turkey 0-3 England (WWC 2011 qualifiers)

She Kicks, issue 1, December 2009 p.6

Two FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 Group 5 qualifiers reported on one England page, both with full line-ups, scorers and referees. At Bloomfield Road, Blackpool on Sunday 25 October 2009, England beat Malta 8-0 in front of 3,681: Fara Williams hit a hat-trick on 20, 37 and 65 minutes, Jess Clarke scored twice, and Faye White, Emily Westwood and Rachel Unitt added the others, with Malta’s Natasha Pace sent off on 55 minutes on a blustery evening. She Kicks calls it a comfortable job done, noting Spain had put 13 past the same opponents. A month later, on Thursday 26 November at the New Buca Stadium in Izmir, Turkey lost 3-0 to an England side missing several regulars through injury and illness, Alex Scott, Lianne Sanderson and Unitt scoring late after Karen Carney’s 62nd-minute introduction jolted a faltering performance into life.
