#ENGJPN: England 2-0 Japan

She Kicks, issue 55, August 2019 p.19

England finished the group stage with a maximum nine points by beating Japan 2-0 in Nice on 19 June 2019. She Kicks credits the win squarely to Ellen White, whose clinical brace dismissed the Asian champions and continued the scoring run that would take her to the tournament’s Bronze Boot. The magazine is careful not to make it sound easy: Japan produced an impressive second-half display without finding a way through, and the scoreline flattered England’s control of the game. Topping Group D sent the Lionesses into a last-16 tie in Valenciennes and kept them on the side of the draw they had wanted. It was also the performance that established White, rather than any of the more heralded names, as England’s decisive attacking figure in France.
