Editor’s Letter: Cue The FA WSL Spring Series

She Kicks Special Edition, February 2017 p.3

She Kicks introduces a free guide to a competition that would be played only once. The editor explains that with the women’s game switching back into line with the winter pyramid from September 2017, something had to fill the gap between seasons and before the Euros, and the FA WSL Spring Series was it. She concedes the concept seemed odd when announced – each team playing the others once, no promotion or relegation, a one-off crown in each division – but argues it is better thought of as every side having nine cup finals to play, whether they treat it as exhibition football, as a test bed for systems and personnel, or as a statement before the autumn. With WSL 1 not starting until 22 April, the spotlight falls on the ten WSL 2 sides who kick off on 11 February.
