In March 2023 Durham became the first senior women’s side to take a workshop from the North East charity If U Care Share, which has worked in schools, colleges and the Premier League since the death of Zoe Tynan in 2016. Symone Arthurs delivers the session, informal and interactive, on what mental health looks like day to day and on how to listen when somebody says they are struggling. A closing video in which she speaks about losing her own brother to suicide visibly changes the room. Durham captain Sarah Wilson calls it phenomenal, and says that although the squad are good at checking in on each other, the session made her ask whether she is doing enough. In sport, she notes, you are expected to put on a brave face and get on with it.
