Defending the Pride

She Kicks, issue 80, July 2023 pp.30–33

A Group D cover interview with the Manchester City defender ahead of a third World Cup, having been the youngest member of England’s bronze-winning 2015 squad. Greenwood talks about becoming a mentor to younger and foreign players, shaped by her own difficult settling-in period at Lyon, and about an obsessive study of the game that takes in forwards’ movement and the City men’s centre-backs. She argues Sarina Wiegman’s biggest change has been mental rather than technical, revisits the shoulder barge on Sara Dabritz in 2015 that she says was out of character but would happily repeat, and explains why the mural of her in Bootle means more than any chat show. She also outlines her AG5 Academy, which she wants fully female-run.
